Show up when people ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for a tradesperson

“Who's a good electrician in Leicester?” Some of your customers now type that into ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Mode instead of scrolling through a list of links. The answer names a few firms.

What the answers draw on

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages that already appear in its search results. It says you don't need a special file, code or trick to appear, and keeping your Business Profile up to date is on its list of advice.

So the groundwork is the same as for search and the map, and it helps with the other assistants that search the web too.

What we do

  • Pages that answer what customers ask, in plain words: what a job includes, prices from, how long it takes, the areas you cover.
  • Every service and town you cover written out, on your site and your Google profile.
  • Your name, number and areas the same on every directory you're listed in.
  • Reviews in customers' own words. Google's rules ban asking for particular wording, so we never do.
  • Structured data on your site that matches what's on the page.

Checking whether you're named

Each month we ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions a customer near you would ask, and note whether you're named and which sites the answer links to. The answers change from one ask to the next, so we look at the pattern over a few months.

Ads in ChatGPT

OpenAI now sells ads in ChatGPT, and UK businesses can set them up themselves. The ads sit below an answer, marked as sponsored. People on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans see them. Plus, Pro and business accounts don't, and nobody under 18 does. OpenAI says the ads don't change what ChatGPT answers.

It's new, so we'd start small, count the enquiries like any other ad, and tell you straight if it isn't bringing work.

What nobody can promise

A mention in ChatGPT or Google's AI. Nobody controls those answers, us included. We'll show you each month whether you're in them.
